The Work of Headquarters

The executives, special agents, and professional staff who work at Headquarters direct, organize, and coordinate FBI activities around the world, including:

  • setting the priorities and policies for the Bureau
  • ensuring centralization and coordination at the highest levels
  • helping lead the fight against terrorism by serving as a hub for intelligence and information
  • providing operational and administrative support to field divisions and overseas offices
  • taking the lead within the FBI during times of national crisis or emergency, directing major case and operations

Other locations

As the FBI has grown, some Headquarters functions have moved to other locations.

  • The Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
  • The Laboratory Division, Operational Technology Division, and FBI Academy are located in Quantico, Virginia.
  • Other specialized facilities, such as high-tech computer forensics centers, are at various locations across the country.

History of FBI Headquarters

The first FBI employees moved into the new Headquarters building on June 28, 1974. At that time, FBI Headquarters offices were housed in nine separate locations. By May 30, 1975, the Director, the associate director, and several divisions had moved in.

Thirty-eight years after the first proposal for a separate FBI building and 15 years after Congress approved construction on the Pennsylvania Avenue site, the last employees moved into the building in June 1977.

The FBI Experience is a self-guided tour at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Open to the public, reservations for The FBI Experience must be submitted through your congressional representative's office up to five months in advance but no less than four weeks prior to your desired tour date.
